Everything you need to know about Uganda's copyright management system — from registration to royalty payouts.
Getting Started
The Uganda Copyright Management System is a national platform that automatically tracks where music is played across Uganda — at radio stations, TV channels, clubs, hotels, and public events. It calculates each creator's fair royalty share based on actual airplay and ensures creators are paid transparently through mobile money.
The platform serves three main groups: Creators (musicians, composers, songwriters, producers, and featured artists), Music Users (radio stations, TV channels, clubs, hotels, restaurants, and event venues), and Administrators (royalty collection bodies and compliance officers). If you create or commercially use music in Uganda, this platform is for you.
After creating your account and being approved as a creator, you can upload your songs from your dashboard. Each song goes through an approval process before it is activated for airplay detection. Once approved, our system will automatically detect and record every time your song plays at a licensed venue.
Log in to your creator dashboard and visit the Play History section. You will see a complete record of every detected play — including the venue name, location, date, time, and duration. This gives you a full audit trail of your music's airplay across Uganda.
Airplay Detection
Our system uses audio fingerprinting technology — similar to how Shazam identifies songs. Small listening devices installed at registered venues continuously monitor the audio being played. When your song is detected, the system logs the exact time, duration, and location. No manual reporting is needed from the venue.
All licensed venues registered on the platform are monitored. These include radio stations, television channels, nightclubs and bars, hotels and restaurants, and public events and concerts. Our field collectors continuously work to register new venues across Uganda.
If a venue is not yet registered on the platform, its plays will not be tracked. You can report unregistered venues to our team for follow-up. If the venue is already registered and your song is still not showing, contact support — there may be a fingerprint issue with your uploaded audio file that we can resolve.
Royalties
Royalties are calculated based on your airplay percentage at each licensed venue. For example, if a venue pays UGX 1,000,000 as a licensing fee and your song was detected playing 60% of the total monitored time at that venue, you receive UGX 600,000. This means your earnings reflect exactly how much your music is actually played — not subjective popularity.
Royalties are credited to your account balance after each distribution cycle. The distribution schedule depends on when venues pay their licensing fees. You can view your current balance and pending earnings at any time from your dashboard.
Yes. When uploading a song, you can define revenue splits between composers, songwriters, producers, and featured artists. The system will automatically apply these splits every time the song earns royalties. Each collaborator with an account on the platform will receive their share directly.
Payments
From your dashboard, go to the Withdrawals section and submit a withdrawal request. Payments are sent directly to your registered mobile money account. Make sure your mobile money number is up to date in your profile settings before requesting a withdrawal.
The platform supports Uganda's major mobile money services for royalty payouts. Ensure your account profile has a valid and active mobile money number. If you encounter any issues with a payout, contact support with your withdrawal reference number.
A revenue advance allows established creators to access a portion of their projected future royalties before the distribution cycle. You can apply from the Revenue Advances section in your dashboard. Applications are reviewed by the administration team based on your track record on the platform.
Copyright
The platform has a conflict resolution system. If a dispute is raised on your song, it will be flagged and reviewed. You will be notified and given the opportunity to submit evidence of ownership. A resolution team will assess both parties' evidence and make a determination. During a dispute, royalty distribution for the affected song may be paused.
Yes. The platform operates in alignment with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) and the Uganda Performing Right Society (UPRS) — Uganda's licensed collection management organisation for music royalties since 1985. It supports Uganda's national copyright management objectives under the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act 2006.
